The foreskin has two main functions. Firstly it exists to protect the glans penis. Secondly the foreskin is a primary sensory part of the penis, containing some of the most sensitive areas of the penis. (Royal Australasian College of Physicians)
The male foreskin is a part of the skin of the organ and fulfils important functions that protect the very sensitive glans. It normally covers the glans and protects it from harmful substances, friction, drying out and injuries. It has apocrine sweat glands, which produce cathepsin B, lysozyme, chymotrypsin, neutrophile elastase, cytokine, and pheromone such as androsterone. Indian scientists have shown that the subpreputial wetness contains lytic material, which has an antibacterial and antiviral function. The natural oils lubricate, moisten and protect the mucous membrane covering of the glans and the inner foreskin. The tip of the foreskin is richly supplied with blood by important blood vessel structures. The foreskin serves as a connective channel for many important veins. Circumcision can lead to erectile dysfunction as it destroys these blood vessels. Their removal can, as described by many of those who have been affected, lead to considerable limitations to sex life and cause psychological stresses. (German Pediatric Association)
The penile foreskin is a natural and integral part of the normal male genitalia. The foreskin has a number of important protective and sexual functions. It protects the penile glans against trauma and contributes to the natural functioning of the penis during sexual activity. Ancient historic accounts and recent scientific evidence leave little doubt that during sexual activity the foreskin is a functional and highly sensitive, erogenous structure, capable of providing pleasure to its owner and his potential partners. (Nordic Association for Clinical Sexology)
The BMA does not believe that parental preference alone constitutes sufficient grounds for performing a surgical procedure on a child unable to express his own view. Parental preference must be weighed in terms of the child's interests. . . . The BMA considers that the evidence concerning health benefit from non-therapeutic circumcision is insufficient for this alone to be a justification for doing it. . . . Some doctors may wish to not perform circumcisions for reasons of conscience. Doctors are under no obligation to comply with a request to circumcise a child. (British Medical Association)
Part of my job as a pediatrician is to advocate for those who cannot speak for themselves. I do not believe there is any justification to impose this procedure on those who cannot be involved in the decision. It is time for the culture of routine circumcision to end.
– Dr. Kenneth Zatz
We recommend that the genital integrity of boys be preserved. Parental request for non-therapeutic circumcision of a son appears to exceed the powers granted to parents by law. We further recommend that doctors refuse to perform non-therapeutic circumcision at parental request. (Doctors Opposing Circumcision)
How could a being that has been aggressed in this way, while totally helpless, develop into a relaxed, loving, trusting person? Indeed he will never be able to trust anyone in life, he will always be on the defensive, unable to open up to others and to life.
– Frederick Leboyer
Circumcision is 'son sacrifice'-lite. In performing it both father and doctor (and occasionally mother) collude in an act that proves their commitment to the state or religion they were raised in. They stamp the dominion of male roles & accepted scripts over the day old boy, onto his very manhood. They wield blades, wires and pain to divorce the child from the female world and initiate them into the male world. But this not a healthy male world the child is brought into. It is a world of obedience without true choice, of toughness without honor, of authority without wisdom, and most of all of meaningless, pointless pain. A pain that is bureaucratic, mechanical, covered with a thinest veneer of rationality but driven by the ignorance and sadism of those in power. Circumcision is the perfect rite for the 20th century. A male rite for a century of industrial war and alienated work. A pointless rite of metal weapons conquering uncomprehending flesh, of absurd pain as a way of life, of state control of its populace, of all the ruptured relations between fathers, mothers and their sons.
