Sweden Democrats or Swedish Democrats (Swedish: Sverigedemokraterna, SD) is a national-conservative, populist political party in Sweden founded in 1988. The party describes itself as social conservative with a nationalist foundation. The party has been characterized by others as right-wing populist or far-right, national-conservative, and anti-immigration. Jimmie Åkesson has been party leader since 2005.

Proposal for ban of circumcision

In September 2019, they have made the following proposal:

Prohibit circumcision of healthy boys
As the UN Convention on the Rights of the Child will now become law on 1 January 2020, this means that many laws will need to be amended and adapted so as not to conflict with the Convention on the Rights of the Child.

One such is Law (2001:499) on the circumcision of boys. There you can read that the boy's attitude to the intervention should be clarified as far as possible. At the same time, we can also read that even unlicensed doctors are allowed to perform circumcisions if the boy is under two months old. How can an infant express their attitude?

In the Children's Convention we can read in e.g. § 3 "All decisions relating to a child shall primarily be considered in what is deemed to be the best interests of the child." Furthermore, we can read in § 24 "Children have the right to the best possible access to health care and rehabilitation. Traditional practices that are harmful to the child's health must be abolished."

If we oppose these, it is quite clear that Sweden must change the law on circumcision for boys if we are to follow the UN Convention on the Rights of the Child.

In addition, we can read in the media about countless circumcisions of boys where there have been serious complications for the little boys. We cannot allow adults to injure and cause small children pain as pain relief is not always possible to give birth to infants.

If someone wants to be circumcised, this should happen at an adult age and not forced on little children.

We propose that the Congress decide:

  • That SKL works actively to comply with the Children's Convention and that no boys are circumcised without medical reasons.
  • That SKL works to have the Act on Circumcision Act 2001: 299 removed from Swedish legislation as it is a direct violation of the Convention on the Rights of the Child.
