Non-therapeutic [[circumcision]] of males for non-religious reasons originated in the [[United Kingdom]] in the early nineteenth century, but eventually spread to other English-speaking nations.
The first recorded non-religious circumcision of a boy occurred in 1870 when [[Lewis Albert Sayre]] circumcised a boy of five years of agefor paralysis. Sayre then continued to advocate circumcision for numerous reasons until his death in 1900. According to Sayre, circumcision was recommended for paralysis, epilepsy, hernia, lunacy, curvature of the spine, and clubfoot.
