The Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE), despite its name, is not a governmental organization. It is a non-governmental organization created by President-elect Donald J. Trump to give advice on reducing the size and wastefulness of the executive branch of the United States government.[1]
DOGE will be lead by centibillionaire Elon Musk and the billionaire entrepreneur Vivek Ramaswamy.[1]
DOGE is supposed to expire on 4 July 2026, which is the 250th anniversary of the founding of the United States.[1]

Proposed operations
Musk and Ramaswamy believe that existing law and recent court decisions give them the power eliminate harmful, inefficient federal regulations. It is expected that the elimination of regulations would permit a reduction in the number of federal employees.[2] Trump said DOGE would be used ""to dismantle Government Bureaucracy, slash excess regulations, cut wasteful expenditures, and restructure Federal Agencies."[3]
President Donald J. Trump has asked campaign lawyer William McGinley to work with Elon Musk and Vivek Ramaswamy at DOGE.[4]
Congressional relations
DOGE House subcommittee
James Comer, Chairman of the House Oversight Committee, announced the formation of a new GOP-controlled "Delivering on Government Efficiency (DOGE)" subcommittee, in the next Congress. Republican Congresswoman Marjorie Taylor Greene of Georgia will be the chair person of the new subcommittee.[5] Greene said, "The goal of DOGE is to bring accountability and GUT useless government agencies."[6]
Republican Congressman Jodey Arrington of Texas, Chairman of the House Budget Committee, commented:
“This country desperately needs bold leadership to restore fiscal sanity in our nation’s capital and reverse the curse of a looming debt crisis.
Thankfully, the American people are returning President Donald J. Trump to the Oval Office. I'm thrilled by President Trump’s decision to appoint Elon Musk and Vivek Ramaswamy to lead the desperately needed Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE) and look forward to working with them to right-size the bloated bureaucracy and rein-in wasteful Washington spending.
It’s time to go to work and deliver on the mandate from the American people - with help from Elon and Vivek, I like our chances!”[7]
ABC news reported that Musk and Ramaswamy are to meet with House Republicans on Thursday, 5 December 2024.[8]
Senate DOGE Caucus
Sen. Joni Ernst (R-Iowa) will take charge of a new Senate DOGE Caucus, which will work with the so-called Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE), led by Musk and Ramaswamy.[9]
DOGE meets with Congress
On Thursday, 5 December 2024, Vivek Ramaswamy met with the DOGE caucus, consisting mostly of Republican lawmakers, while Elon Musk met with Senator John Thune.[10]
Sen. Thom Tillis said it was “way too early” to identify key priorities of the caucus and emphasized that it would be an ongoing effort through the four years of Trump’s administration.[10]
