Nelly R. Mugo is member of the 2018 Guideline Development Group (GDG) of the WHO. The GDG's task is to develop updated recommendations on safe male circumcision for HIV prevention and related service delivery for adolescent boys and men in generalized HIV epidemics.[1]

Biography

Nelly Mugo has a joint appointment at the Kenya Medical Research Institute (KEMRI) and the University of Washington (USA), department of global health. She heads the sexual reproductive adolescent child health research program, KEMRI. Her research focuses on both HIV and cervical cancer prevention.

She leads a clinical trial site in Thika, Kenya that has conducted high impact HIV prevention research including the Partners PrEP Study, the landmark clinical trial of pre-exposure prophylaxis (PrEP) for HIV prevention among serodiscordant couples and the demonstration project of integrated PrEP and antiretroviral treatment for serodiscordant couples. This work has laid the foundation for PrEP implementation in Kenya and globally. She is the lead investigator for the Partners Scale up project, Thika site, and will be conducting a clinical trial on HIV self-testing to reduce frequency of clinic visits for oral PrEP users.

She participated in the development of the Kenya HIV Prevention Revolution Road Map and led the writing of the HIV PrEP section of the Kenya 2016 ART guidelines. Dr. Mugo is currently a member of the Kenya PrEP technical working group and the reproductive cancer technical working group.

Dr. Mugo co-chaired the WHO Guidelines Committee for Couples HIV Testing and Counseling and Antiretroviral Therapy for Treatment and Prevention in Serodiscordant Couples in 2011, the 2012 World Health Organization and Stakeholders’ Technical Consultation on Hormonal Contraception and HIV, the WHO Guidelines Advisory Committee for PrEP for Prevention in 2015. She has been a member of the International Partnership for Microbicides (IPM), Safety Evaluation Committee Meeting providing oversight for the Ring study. She is well published and has presented in multiple global forum on the topic of HIV prevention.[2]

PubMed lists Dr. Mugo as a named author of 108 papers on various subjects. A number of the papers relate to HIV infection, especially in woman and as partners of HIV+ males. There is no clear indication of her position on male circumcision.
