He graduated from [https://stanford.edu/ Stanford University] in 1990 with a Bachelor of Arts and Master of Arts with membership in Phi Beta Kappa. He remained at Stanford to do doctoral study in economics and attend the Stanford University School of Medicine, receiving an M.D. in 1997 and a Ph.D in economics in 2000.
