Abstract

Circumcision is a very controversial issue in the United States, fueled by cultural traditions and emotional debate. For many parents, circumcision seems like the “norm” and they make the decision to circumcise their sons rather automatically. For parents seeking more information, existing media about this topic is often so polarized that they are left with an abundance of opinions but a lack of evidence-based decision making tools. Like an intricate patchwork quilt that is not yet sewn together, there are so many different patches to examine: medical, personal, cultural, and ethical. They only cover the whole picture when threaded together into one piece.

They are a crew of clinicians and award-winning filmmakers who are going to fill the gap and make what doesn’t exist: a documentary film that will open up the conversation. Their vision is to merge a historical overview with testimonials and current data, using both medical and sociological approaches. They will interview boys, men, mothers, fathers, doctors, midwives, and experts on circumcision culture in the United States.

Blending accurate health information, personal experiences, statistics, and bioethics, they envision that this documentary will question routine male circumcision, and in return encourage parents to question it too.

The documentary explores infant male circumcision from many angles: culture, religion, history, sexuality, and medical recommendations. Produced by two nurse-midwives, it is thoughtful examination into the many layers of this controversial topic.
