In 1987, Schoen was appointed head of the Task Force on Circumcision that created the [[American_Academy_of_Pediatrics#Third_policy_.281989.29| third policy (1989)]] by the [[American Academy of Pediatrics]]after reading his joyful paean to circumcision, ''Ode to the Circumcised Male'',<ref>American Journal of Diseases in Children, Vol {{REFjournal |last=schoen |first=Edgar J. |init=EG |author-link=Edgar J. According to Schoen, not performing [[circumcision]] would be "taking us back to nineteenth-century medicine on the eve of the 21st century," and that circumcision will prevent "dermatological problems".<ref name="CaseForCirc"/>
