Unsatisfactory cosmetic results including uncircumcised appearance occasionally result from a child or adult circumcision. They seem to be caused either by a prominent or wrinkled circumcision scar or by insufficient removal of tissue necessary to produce a "circumcised appearance".

Expectations of appearance are socially or culturally determined. Parents may seek circumcision for social or cultural reasons since all claimed medical or prophylactic benefits have been disproved. Intact adult males may seek circumcision to conform to a perceived cultural norm. Insufficient removal of foreskin tissue is not medically harmful.

Every circumcision is an intentional injury to the penis. The extent of the injury is increased by greater excision of tissue, however revised circumcisions are still sought for cosmetic appearance.
