Gary Shteyngart, MFA, (born 5 May 1972 in Leningrad, Soviet Union), although born to a Jewish family, was not circumcised, because ritual circumcision was not permitted in the Soviet Union at that time.
Gary Shteyngart is a Soviet-born Jewish novelist and journalist, who migrated to the United States when seven-years-old.
He received an unnecessary ritual circumcision, after which a serious, painful complication developed. He had a skin bridge, which is a complication of circumcision that cannot occur in foreskinned men.
He teaches writing at Columbia University and is a contributor to The New Yorker.
