An anonymous boy who was circumcised on the second day of life at the Hunterdon Medical Center of Flemington, New Jersey, USA on 11 February 2022, has received a settlement totaling $5,000,000 for injuries sustained during his medically-unnecessary, non-therapeutic circumcision with a Mogen clamp by Dr. Michael Girgis, supervised by Dr. Cindy Barter.[1] Dr. Girgis had never before performed a child circumcision.

The reported injuries include amputation of one-third of the boy's penis. The boy was transferred to Morristown Medical Center, where a pediatric urologist was able to reattach the tip of the penis, but there will be permanent scarring and iatrogenic hypospadias.[1]

There is no medical indication for circumcision of the newborn, so the amputation of the foreskin was not done for a medical indication. The purpose of the circumcision is unclear. The parents reportedly did not receive the legally-required informed consent.[1]

Strimling (1996) had previously reported the partial amputation of the penis when using the Mogen clamp.[2] The faulty design of the Mogen clamp has been blamed for penile amputations.[3]

The highest known award for circumcision harm is $22.8 million for a case of penis electrocution that occurred at Northside Hospital in Atlanta, Georgia in August 1985.[4]
