Longer foreskin is favored by many men, since the time of the ancient Greeks,[1] to the present.

Ancient times

According to James DeMeo (1989), male circumcision (MGM) originated in northeast Africa before the start of recorded history.[2] The Hebrews learned about circumcision durng their stay in Egypt.[3] Moses was not circumcised and did not require circumcision, however Joshua did require circumcision, so the males were circumcised when they camped at Gilgal, just west of the Jordan River.[4]

Later, chapter seventeen was inserted into Genesis to cover the institution of circumcision.[5]

Jewish men in Greek society

Circumcised Jewish men encountered significant issues when they tried to blend into Greek society.

Key features of Hellenistic culture were athletic exercises in gymnasia and athletic performances in public arenas, where men appeared in the nude. While the penis sheathed in an intact foreskin was normal and acceptable, ancient Greeks and their Hellenistic successors considered the circumcised penis to be offensive, as it was perceived as a vulgar imitation of erection, unfit for public display. The ancient Greeks and their Hellenistic successors considered the "ideal prepuce" to be long, tapered, and "well-proportioned." The acroposthion was seen as being "the source of blissful and intense pleasurable sensations."[6] Removing it was considered mutilation. Men with a short foreskin, a condition known as lipodermos, would wear a leather cord called a kynodesme to prevent its accidental exposure.[1][7]

The sight of circumcised genitals at public baths or gymnasia would inspire laughter and ridicule. Jewish men, who wished to gain acceptance in the larger social world and needed a full-length foreskin to cover their glans penis, gave themselves a presentable appearance by pulling the remaining foreskin forward as far as possible, and keeping it under enough tension to encourage permanent stretching toward its original length. Using a fibular pin or a cord, they pierced the front of the remaining foreskin, drew it forward, and fixed it in place; sometimes they would attach a weight to maintain tension. Over time the foreskin expanded and restored at least some of the appearance of an intact organ.[5] and epispasm was invented. Up until the 2th century, Jewish circumcision involved only partial foreskin removal.

Jewish response to epispasm

Rabbis of the second century responded to the practice of epispasm to increase the injury by mandating peri’ah to change Jewish circumcision, or the complete ablation of the foreskin in order to prevent Jewish men from engaging in foreskin restoration.[5] It is clear that the circumcised Jewish men of antiquity needed a long, full-length foreskin to function in Greek society. It is not clear what other advantages they may have found.

Modern times

Especially in the United States, with the incidence of circumcision decreasing[8] [9] and the incidence of foreskin restoration increasing,[10] there is increasing interest in the normal male foreskin.

Men are considering and discussing such questions as:

  • How long should the foreskin be to obtain the most cosmetic appearance?
  • How long should the foreskin be to provide the most comfort?
  • How long should the foreskin be to provide the best protection?
  • How long should the foreskin be to provide the optimum erogenous sensation?

These questions are now relevant, since BUFF rediscovered tissue expansion as used by the ancients. Application of traction with the aid of a device or manually now enables foreskinned men to increase the length of their natural foreskin, if desired, and enables circumcised men to create a foreskin, which previously had been impossible.

There is a wide range of naturally occurring foreskin-length from almost non-existent to very long with a significant acroposthion. Foreskin length appears to be distributed in accordance with Gaussian distribution, with a graph that would take the shape of a bell curve.[11] Many foreskinned and restoring men express an appreciation for a foreskin that is near or beyond the maximum normal length.[12][13][14]

Characteristics of longer foreskins

As with shorter foreskins, the ridged band is located just inside the tip of the foreskin.

Longer foreskins are much less likely to spontaneously retract. The longest foreskins, if manually retracted, are likely to glide forward to recover and protect the glans penis when released.

O'Farrell et al. (2008) reported a longer foreskin improves wetness in the preputial sac.[15] Fleiss, Hodges & Van Howe (1998) reported the presence of cathepsin B, lysosyme, chymotrypsin, neutrophil elastase, and cytokine in the sub-preputial moisture.[16] These substances have a destructive lytic effect on pathogens and make the preputial sac a trap for disease-causing organisms.

Men with the longest foreskins are able to glide the foreskin without exposing the glans penis.[17]

The following is a guide to foreskin length that was provided by Advanced Devices, Inc., a manufacturer of restoration devices. It is NSFW because it contains drawings (not photographs) of foreskins of various lengths. Please exercise discretion in viewing it.

The late intactivist, John A. Erickson, famously said, "One can't be too rich, too thin, or have too much foreskin."

The percentage of foreskinned men in American society is gradually but continually increasing.[18] As time goes on, more and more American men with a longer foreskin will come to understand, appreciate, and enjoy the pleasure from the tip at the end.

An unusually long foreskin may be given the term macroposthia.

Lengthening the foreskin

The foreskin is responsive to tissue expansion techniques, as mentioned above, so intact men who desire a longer foreskin may gradually lengthen their foreskin. The process involves the use of stretching to induce mitosis, which gradually increases the quantity of foreskin. The process is slow, but once it is done, it will last the rest of one's life.
