Cole Jordan Groth
Baby Cole Jordan Groth (born 31 March 2025 in New York, NY, USA) was diagnosed while in his mother's womb with congenital heart disease (CHD).[1], so is parents elected to give birth at Presbyterian Morgan Stanley Children's Hospital in the Washington Heights neighborhood of Manhattan, which was then thought to be the best children's hospital in the New York area, so he could be treated for CHD.[2] [3]
Cole is the grandson of Timothy D. Groth, M.D., a pain consultant.
A few days later, Cale received surgery to place a stent to treat his heart disease.[2]

Solicitation for foreskin amputation
The website of Presbyterian Morgan Stanley Children's Hospital provides extensive promotional information on circumcision of infants but does not mention exsanguination, injury to vital organs, or death as a possible outcome. No information is offered regarding the nature of the foreskin, the loss of protective, immunological, sexual, and sensory functions, or the possible later psychological issues.
Solicitation for medically non-indicated, non-therapeutic circumcision is a popular activity because it increases hospital revenue.[4] [5] There are no medical indications for circumcision of the newborn.[6] It is a medically-unnecessary, non-therapeutic procedure.[7]
Circumcision creates horrible pain and trauma, so an infant must be "stable and healthy" to survive the surgery.[8] It is not clear that Cole, who recently had heart surgery, was stable and healthy.[9] It also is not clear that the legally required informed consent was received by the parents, Tim and Gabrielle Groth, who apparently granted surrogate consent for a non-therapeutic surgical amputation and genital mutilation in violation of standards of medical ethics.[10]
It is unclear why the Groths selected harmful circumcision for Cole, since circumcision of the newborn does not treat or prevent disease and puts the infant boy at risk of bleeding, infection, and surgical misadventure and certain loss of functional tissue.[11] The most usual reason is to enable the hospital and attending physician to collect a fee.[12]
Cole's circumcision
The circumcision was performed on 14 April 2025 at about 11:00 PM by a nurse-practitioner on the night shift, who has not been identified.[13] It is unclear if Cole received any pain medication or how effective it was.
No tests were performed to determine the ability of Cole's blood to clot.
The circumcision wound started to haemorrhage in the night, but was not immediately detected. A newborn baby has very little blood to lose. Loss of only a slight amount of blood can and does cause exsanguination and hypovolemic shock.[14] Losing over 2.4 ounces of blood may cause death. Cole narrowly escaped having his name added to the fatalities list.[15]
Tim Groth, Cole's father, later expressed surprise that circumcision can lead to death.[16]
Cole's injuries
Cole's loss of blood caused by his unnecessary circumcision caused substantial organ injury. Part of his intestines died and had to be removed by an abdominal operation. He has been fitted with a colostomy bag.[3]
He will need additional surgery later to reconnect the residual parts of his intestines.[3]
There also is concern about liver damage, kidney damage, and brain damage from the exsanguination.[17] Cole remains in critical condition.[2]
Cole's future
Cole must remain in hospital for several months, where he is being fed intravenously.[18] His digestive system must be repaired so he can digest food before he can be discharged.
He will be likely to have psychological issues as a result of his circumcision trauma and the long hospital treatment.[19]
He will have diminished erogenous sensation in adult life because of the loss of the ridged band in his foreskin.[19]
It is likely to be a long time before he can join his parents and his brother, Bryce, in their Lake Grove, Long Island home.
On the bright side, Cole's father, Tim, operates a pain management company, so he may be able to help Cole manage his pain issues.
The response from the hospital management
The management of the hospital, perhaps fearful of potential litigation, has refused comment, citing patient privacy as the reason.[2]

Litigation
One should note that Cole, himself, may bring a suit for injuries and damages suffered in childhood in New York when he reaches the age of majority at age 18.[20]
